Frequently Asked Questions
We're happy to answer.
Questions from volunteers, social workers, donor businesses, and families.
Do I need experience with foster care?
No. Most of what we ask of volunteers doesn't require specialized knowledge. We'll provide context and guidance. What we need is reliability and kindness.
How much time do I need to give?
Most projects take 2–4 hours. There's no annual minimum commitment. You can volunteer once or every month.
Are there age requirements?
Volunteers should be 18 or older to participate independently. Teens 16–17 may participate with a parent or guardian on certain projects.
How are projects matched to me?
We'll share available projects based on your interests and location. You choose what to take on — nothing is assigned without your agreement.
What if I need to cancel a project?
Let us know as early as possible so we can find coverage. Life happens — we'll never guilt you for it.
Will I meet the families I'm helping?
It depends on the project. Some involve direct contact; others are more behind-the-scenes. We'll always be clear upfront.
Can I volunteer as a group?
Yes. Group volunteer days are something we actively plan for. Note it in your sign-up form.
When does volunteering start?
We're launching Summer 2026. Sign up now and you'll be among the first contacted.
How are donations used?
Every donation is tied to a specific project for a real family. We report back to donors on what their contribution funded.
What's the tax deductibility process?
Becoming Kin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. We'll provide a receipt for every gift.
How are partner businesses recognized?
Founding partners are permanently recognized on our website, in our communications, and at events. Giving level determines the scope of recognition.
Can we donate goods instead of money?
Absolutely. In-kind donations of goods and services are a key part of our model. Contact us to discuss what you can offer.
How is impact reported?
We'll provide project-level impact reports to founding partners — what your donation funded, when it was delivered, and a brief note from the volunteer. We're building this system now.
How do we get support from Becoming Kin?
Through your case manager or social worker, who can submit a referral on your behalf. Once we activate, we'll also post information about how families in our network can request support.
Is there a cost to families?
No. Every service Becoming Kin provides to families is free.
Will our case manager know we received help?
We work in coordination with case managers, not around them. Referrals come from them. We don't take on support without their knowledge.
What kinds of support are available?
Welcome Home Kits for new placements, birthday boxes, meal trains, back-to-school supplies, Family Day Out events, and more. See our Projects page for the full list.
Is Becoming Kin a registered nonprofit?
Becoming Kin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the process of establishment. We'll update this page when our registration is confirmed.
Who runs the organization?
Hogan Wagner, BCBA, is the founding director. He is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with 12 years of experience working with children and adults with developmental needs.
Where does funding come from?
Initially, Becoming Kin is funded through Hogan's own resources, including proceeds from his ABA therapy practice, Kindaya ABA. We're actively building a donor and partner base.
What's the service area?
Southern California, with a current focus on Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.
When did Becoming Kin launch?
Becoming Kin is launching in 2026. We're currently in our founding phase, recruiting volunteers, connecting with case managers, and inviting founding business partners.
